A few years ago – 2015, to be precise – I created a superhero. Not any ordinary superhero, mind you. This one cannot use violence in battling the bad guys.
How does that work?
That’s actually what the whole thing is about. How does a superhero (or anyone for that matter) battle evil in the world without resorting to violence? Is it even possible? (SPOILER: The book doesn’t offer up any easy answers, although having magical powers conferred upon you by virtue of having done lots of yoga is a big plus.)
And if I do say so myself, I think the book has turned out to be surprisingly prescient. Many of the things Urban Yogini encounters in her adventures are still very much with us, from authoritarian violence, the futility of elections, the military-industrial complex, the Federal Reserve sucking up the wealth of ordinary people, well-intentioned protest movements quickly getting co-opted and used to further the ends of the power elites – to the problems those elites are now having trying to maintain their power over the rest of us. It’s all here, and it's all still relevant.
I’m posting the first episode here, which I illustrated myself. You can find the entire book here (illustrated by myself and some helpful artists), and the special Christmas episode here. I’m told they make fantastic stocking stuffers!
(NOTE: Because of all the images, you probably won’t be able to see the whole thing in this email, but will have to open it up in a browser.)
Enjoy!
