Oh No! I'm Back on Twitter!
I received this in my inbox today.
For the whole silly story about why I was suspended, see here. I also spoke with Tom Mullen about it here.
So now they’ve let me back on. Presumably after recognizing how completely silly the suspension was in the first place.
But here’s the problem: This suspension was a wake-up call for me, about my social-media usage. I recognized immediately what a benefit it was to me to not even have the option of “just jumping on Twitter for a minute to see what’s going on”.
It was freeing. I felt liberated. And that made me realize that I’ve been kind of fooling myself about how much time I spend on social media, on taking in information in a non-intentional way, and, truly, wasting time.
So now I’m back on. And I’m grateful for that wake-up call. Because it’s not just about Twitter - it’s about how I’m taking in information more generally, and how I’m spending my time more generally. And now it’s on me to create some rules for myself for how I engage with social media, with information, and with time.
If I discover anything interesting in doing so, I’ll post it here in case it’s helpful for others.
