dear b on the b, YOU are a breath of fresh air...thanks for the thoughtful and well-crafted piece on the 'diana effect' and the series 'crown' effect' i find them both resonant and relatable, not to mention a well-needed fresh of breath air from and insight into the 'news' of the day. 'a light went out' and millions felt it's significance consciously or 'un'...a piercing of the heart nonetheless.

"I still don't fully understand what happened to me twenty seven years ago."

At the risk of committing pop psychology malpractice, and diagnosing from afar, your description of your reaction to Diana's death sounds like you had an emotional breakdown that happened to coincide with Diana's death.

You might want to consider what was going on in your life at the time of that event.

You might have had the same reaction--crying for weeks--to any slightly sad event that happened at that time.

LOL!!!

No, I think I know the difference between being very, very, sad, and having an "emotional breakdown." But thanks anyway!

Sobbing for weeks, believing the depression was brought on by the death of a celebrity, is probably the very definition of an emotional breakdown.

Just trying to help!

Interesting examination of the power of the popular press and celebrity publicity.

Thanks.

Again, I can recognize the difference between sadness and depression. But call it what you like.
