Terrific article. I don’t disagree with it at all. I missed a lot of the indoctrination of American schools as an immigrant, and fleeing from a commie country I tend to focus on the concepts that draw parallels between the isms, however, something like the “free market” has this nebulous definition in my mind. Perhaps what Toby is attacking is insatiable avarice rather than the concept of a free market, but possibly using that concept as a short hand because a human quality isn’t an organized social infrastructure. Thanks for some food for thought.
Interesting. I've always noticed a difference between Americans and most non-Americans in terms of their attitudes towards government. Not that non-Americans all agree with me about it, just that there seems to be a more adult/realistic attitude about the nature of the state and those who seek power. Not so much blind trust.
And yes, I agree that Toby - and others - is likely meaning something other than "the free market", when he attacks "capitalism." Perhaps "insatiable greed", or maybe "industrialization"? But I believe it is important to be clear about the meanings of the words we use, or we just end up talking past each other.
